In this intensely interesting volume, Iain Murray gives an historical overview of evangelical Christianity  between 1950 and now.  Inside the cover  is  an outline of major events in church history during this period.   Billy Graham, Martyn-Lloyd Jones, James Packer and John Stott   are among the men whose contributions during these 50 years are illustrated.   How these men have responded to the events and discussions provides the background for the struggle going on today in the so called Amain line@ churches.

Chapter 11, titled AFrom the Quarries to the Temple,@  is particularly helpful.  AAt almost all times in history the kingdom of God has appeared to be in confusion to the outward eye.  It is faith in the promises of God which provides a different perspective.  The Holy Spirit assures us that infinite wisdom and love are presently directing the life of the church and that eternity will be witness to their success when a multitude which no man can number will be glorified with Christ.  What we see now is but the beginning.@ (P317) The book continues with the illustration of the building of Solomon=s Temple: AThe temple when it was being built, was built with stone finished at the quarry, so that no hammer or chisel or any iron tool was heard in the temple when it was being built.A (1 Kings 6:7)   The church today is in the quarry where the Master Builder is shaping the stones.   Be sure to buy or borrow this book of Iain Murray=s.
