What
is the fourth petition [in the Lord=s Prayer]? AGive
us this day our daily bread.@
That is: Be pleased to provide for all our bodily needs so that thereby we may
acknowledge that thou art the only source of all that is good, and that
without thy blessing neither our care and labor nor thy gifts can do us any
good. Therefore, may we withdraw our trust from all creatures and palce it in
thee alone. I.
Turn to God to Meet Your Needs A. God provides for all His creatures.
These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat
in due season. That thou givest them they gather: thou
openest thine hand, they are filled with good.
(Psalm 104:27-28) B.
If God provides for the Creation why wouldn=t
He provide for those purchased for Him on the cross.
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life,
what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye
shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold
the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into
barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much
better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit
unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the
lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they
spin: and yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not
arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of
the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he
not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore
take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we
drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things
do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of
all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you.
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall
take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the
evil thereof. (Matthew
6:25-34) II.
In Asking God to Meet Our Needs We Acknowledge He Is the Source of all Good A.
Providence is a witness to God=s
benevolence. Nevertheless he left not himself without witness,
in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons,
filling our hearts with food and gladness. (Acts 14:17) B.
When we rely on God for all things we repudiate all means and efforts to
manipulate Him. Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he
needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
(Acts 17:25) C.
If the believer=s
means and goals both come from God, there reason to hope for success. Therefore, my
beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the
work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not
in vain in the Lord. (1 Corinthians
15:58) III.
Hope Firmly and Exclusively in the Lord A.
When God gives hard times, those hard times draw us closer to Him. And he
humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with
manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that
he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every
word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
(Deuteronomy 8:3) B.
Instead of worrying, delight in God=s
provision.
Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou
dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in
the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way
unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And
he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the
noonday. Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself
because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth
wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not
thyself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off: but
those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a
little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt
diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. But the
meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of
peace. (Psalm
37:3-11) C.
Learn to distinguish real value. A
little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. For
the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous.
(Psalm 37:16-17) D.
Until you have turned to God for help there is nothing you can do worth doing
and after you have turned to Him you have what you most need. Except
the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the
LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of
sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
(Psalm 127:1-2) 1.
Let Go have your worries. Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain
thee: he shall
never suffer the righteous to be moved. (Psalm
55:22) 2.
Don=t
hold back from God. Trust in him
at all times; ye
people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah. (Psalm
62:8) 3.
Avoid the world=s
failing ways. Trust not in
oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your
heart upon them. (Psalm 62:10 ) 4.
There is absolutely no help in the world=s
ways. Put not your trust in princes,
nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.
(Psalm 146:3) |
